Wells Heath Jr., 94, of Paducah, died Saturday at Western Baptist Hospital.
Wells was born January 25, 1917, in McCracken County to the late Wells Heath, Sr. and Mable Brooks Heath. Wells served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in England, Italy and Austria. He had a lifelong interest in baseball, both as a player and as a coach and supporter of his son and many other area players. He was oftentimes seen sitting in the stands at various fields and especially Brooks Stadium, enthusiastically whistling and yelling encouragement. His personal career began as a young man who played baseball at Western Kentucky University and for the Twin States League as well as overseas when he was in the Army.
Wells was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He hunted ducks and big game but his favorite was crows. He kept a detailed log of his hunting adventures that spanned many years. In addition, he was the first Kentuckian to score the Grand Slam as a big game hunter of North American Wild Sheep.
His occupations included being self-employed in the timber business, real estate, and retired as an investor.
Surviving are his children, Wells Heath III and wife Malissa of Paducah, Dede Culp and husband John of Paducah, and Rebecca Cromwell and husband Kelley of Benton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris Morgan Heath; a sister, Kathleen Heath Molloy; and his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fountain Avenue United Methodist Church, where Wells was an active and dedicated member for over ninety years and had served on the board of Trustees for over fifty years. Rev. Gregory Waldrop will officiate the memorial service. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
