Obituary for John William Mercer
John was a Paducah native, a graduate of Paducah Tilghman High School and a member of Broadway United Methodist Church where he was the longest standing member. For over 60 years he was a member of the Paducah Masonic Lodge #127 F&AM and was the former owner of Mercer Standard Service. John had a commercial pilot's license and loved flying his planes, he also enjoyed many years of traveling, hunting, fishing, boating and camping with his friends and family. John enjoyed many motorcycle trips, riding up until his 80's on his Harley Davidson and his Honda Goldwing motorcycles. He was still telling stories about his favorite horse Trixie up until his death.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 77 years, Ebith Stubblefield Mercer of Paducah; two daughters, Virginia Barnett and husband, Steve of Denver, CO and Carol Polk and her husband, Harvey of Calvert City, KY; three grandchildren, Debbie Johnson, Leslie Cutter and Jon Polk and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Warfield and Bertha Kelton Mercer; two brothers, John Wesley Mercer and Walter Mercer.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Milner & Orr Funeral of Paducah with Dr. Joe Beal officiating. Burial will follow at Maplelawn Park Cemetery in Paducah. Friends may call after 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2015 until service time at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
