Herbert Eugene Holt, 84, of Symsonia, died Monday at Baptist Health-Paducah.
Herbert was born in Paducah on December 29, 1931 to the late Hilford and Lila Rutherford Holt.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attained a rank of MM-3. He
worked as a fireman at Illinois Central Railroad before relocating his family to Covina, California,
where he worked for A.O. Smith Company as a machinist, tool and die maker, and eventually plant
manager. After returning to the Paducah area, he was a longtime member of Clarks River Baptist
Church. He and his wife, Shirley, traveled extensively throughout the United States in their RV,
even taking a six-month trip that took them throughout Alaska. He enjoyed vegetable gardening,
hunting and fishing, and camping and traveling.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of sixty years, Shirley June Mitchell Holt; children,
Pamela Holt Downing and husband Michael of Mayfield, Herbert Eugene Holt, Jr. and wife Lori of
Monticello, IA, and Roger Wallace Holt of Lone Oak; grandchildren, Robin Strasburg, Robert
Downing, Ashley Holt Quinn, Justin Downing, Taylor Holt, and Reece Holt; siblings, Judy Holt
Duncan and husband Lonnie of Fulton, KY, and Billy Holt of Lone Oak; and eight greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with
Pastor Jeff Collins officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Maplelawn Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-8pm at the funeral home.
